When ordinary glasses, contact lenses, medical treatment, and/or surgery can not correct sight to the normal range a person has low vision. Many people think that means nothing more can be done, however, nothing could be farther from the truth. At the CSBPS clinic, we work with clients to maximize use of any remaining sight so they can still complete many tasks and activities independently.

What to expect from the CSBPS clinic

Our clinic routinely sees people two times; first for a complete evaluation and initial training and then for a follow-up. The first appointment usually takes about an hour and a half; the second averages less than an hour.

Before the first appointment, a low vision specialist will call you to gather some basic information about your current use of vision. It is most helpful if you can think ahead about specific problems you are having because of failing vision. These may include problems with reading the newspaper, cooking supper, watching television, sewing or doing crafts, getting around your neighborhood, or other activities.

This call is a great opportunity to be very specific about what you want to get out of this process. We do not focus on the same things with every client; we work very specifically to meet each individual's needs.

During your first appointment at CSBPS, our optometrist performs a low vision evaluation. This might involve you reading an eye chart or flashcards using a number of different lenses and lights. The doctor then suggests and explains devices and techniques available to assist you.

After meeting with the doctor, you meet with a low vision specialist in a private training room where you are trained to use new techniques and the latest available devices. You will likely find two or three devices that might work well for the activities that interest you. The CSBPS clinic includes a free loaner program so you can take several items home to practice and see which works best for you.

You then schedule a follow-up visit, usually about two weeks later. There you receive additional training and can ask any questions you might have. At that time, you also return loaner items. You may choose to purchase the devices best suited for your needs. Devices are available through SightConnection, the CSBPS store. The low vision specialist might also recommend other CSBPS services such as counseling, training in safe travel, training in independent living skills, or consulting with our assistive technology specialist.

How to get a referral to the CSBPS clinic

he main CSBPS low vision clinic is located at the agency office in Seattle. If you are unable to travel to Seattle, we have satellite low vision clinics in Sedro Woolley and Bremerton. Your eye physician can refer you or you might decide for yourself that you would like to learn more about how best to live with your eye condition. To begin the process, you must give your doctor written permission to release your eye health records to CSBPS. You can call your eye doctor or simply write a letter requesting records be sent to: CSBPS at 9709 Third Ave. NE, #100, Seattle, WA 98115-2027 or faxed to (206) 525-0422. Appointments for all clinics are made through the Seattle office. Once we have received the records, we will contact you for an appointment. Due to the demand for our services and the coordination between doctor offices, this process can take several weeks.

IMPORTANT: Your eye doctor must have already completed a medical eye exam within the past year. This low vision service is a consultation service, not a primary medical exam to determine eye health. Your own doctor will also continue to monitor your eyes regularly for any conditions that could result in eye health complications or additional vision loss.

Costs and Coverage for the CSBPS clinic

The cost for two visits varies depending on your vision needs and the number of visits required. Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance can be billed. HMOs may require prior authorization to cover the cost. Please keep in mind, insurance generally does not cover the costs of low vision devices.
